HOW TO CARE FOR YOUR MOUTH AFTER PERIODONTAL SURGERY.
EATING- Don’t eat for one hour after leaving the office. Avoid spicy foods, do not open too wide, liquids should be consumed at a comfortable temperature. We recommend foods such as: yogurt, ice cream, bananas, potato puree etc. Avoid chewing on the surgical area.
BLEEDING- It’s normal to see some slight oozing of blood around the gauze. Do not rinse, gargle or expectorate. If bleeding lasts more than one hour, fold one or two pieces of gauze or a saturated tea bag and place against surgical site and apply pressure for 20 min. Do not remove it to examine it. If the bleeding doesn’t stop, please contact our office.
SWELLING- Place an ice pack as soon as possible for 15 min. every hour for six hours. You may notice some swelling of your face tomorrow or the next day. It will disappear gradually.
EXERTION- Do not perform any vigorous activities as this may produce bleeding. Do not bend over or pick up anything heavy. Also, no swimming or saunas for the first three days.
MEDICATIONS- Take prescribed medications as directed by your periodontist.
IF YOU WERE GIVEN AN ANTIBIOTIC REMEMBER TO FINISH ALL OF THE PILLS EVEN IF YOU HAVE NO MORE PAIN!!!!!
HYGIENE- Be sure to brush you teeth like you normally do, but avoid the surgical area. Clean the surgical area with gauze that will be given to you. Wet the gauze with sterile salt water at like warm temperature and wipe carefully. Proper healing requires a clean environment. You may rinse your mouth with salt water throughout the day as many times as you can.
